Description
Overview of the medicine
Subazol is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) containing Pantoprazole, used to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It treats conditions like heartburn, acid reflux, and stomach ulcers.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 40 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks for GERD/erosive esophagitis. For maintenance, 20-40 mg daily. For Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, initial dose 40 mg twice daily, adjusted as needed.
Elderly
No dose adjustment generally required, but caution in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment necessary. Pantoprazole is not removed by hemodialysis.
How to Take
Take orally before a meal, preferably in the morning. Swallow whole, do not crush or chew. IV formulation is administered by healthcare professionals.
Mechanism of Action
Pantoprazole irreversibly binds to and inhibits the H+/K+-ATPase proton pump in gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing gastric acid secretion.

Primarily excreted in urine (approx. 80%) and feces (approx. 18%) as metabolites.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to pantoprazole or any component of the formulation.
- Hypersensitivity to other substituted benzimidazoles.
Drug Interactions
Clopidogrel
May reduce antiplatelet effect of clopidogrel.
Methotrexate
May increase methotrexate levels and toxicity.
Drugs dependent on gastric pH for absorption (e.g., ketoconazole, atazanavir, nelfinavir)
May alter absorption.
Storage
Store below 30°C, in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Limited experience with overdose. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Pantoprazole is not dialyzable.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk, caution advised in nursing mothers.
