Description
Overview of the medicine
Suconal (Sertraline Hydrochloride) is an antidepressant medication used to treat major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and social anxiety disorder.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial 50 mg once daily, may increase up to 200 mg daily.
Elderly
Lower starting doses or slower titration may be considered.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment generally required for mild to moderate impairment; caution for severe impairment.
How to Take
Orally, once daily, with or without food. Can be taken in the morning or evening.
Mechanism of Action
Sertraline selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) by the presynaptic neuron, thereby potentiating serotonergic activity in the central nervous system.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects may take 2-4 weeks to become apparent.
Excretion
Mainly via urine and feces as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 26 hours for sertraline, 66 hours for N-desmethylsertraline (active metabolite).
Absorption
Well absorbed orally; peak plasma concentrations reached in 4.5-8.4 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by CYP2C19, to N-desmethylsertraline.
