Description
Overview of the medicine
Sucralose is an artificial sweetener derived from sucrose. It is non-caloric as most of it is not broken down or absorbed by the body. It is approximately 600 times sweeter than sugar and is used as a sugar substitute in various foods and beverages.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
As desired to achieve sweetness, typically one 12 mg sachet per serving, which sweetens like 2 teaspoons of sugar. Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) is 5 mg/kg body weight/day.
Elderly
Same as adults, within the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI).
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required due to minimal absorption and rapid excretion, but caution advised with very high doses in severe impairment.
How to Take
Oral administration. Dissolve the powder in hot or cold beverages, sprinkle over cereals, fruits, or use in cooking and baking as a sugar substitute.
Mechanism of Action
Sucralose binds strongly to the sweet taste receptors on the tongue, providing a sweet sensation. Unlike sugar, it is not recognized as a carbohydrate by the body and is minimally absorbed, thus providing no calories or affecting blood glucose levels significantly.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Immediate (upon contact with taste receptors).
Excretion
The unabsorbed portion is excreted unchanged in feces. The absorbed portion is excreted mainly unchanged in urine.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 to 2.3 hours for the absorbed portion.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (approximately 11-27% of an oral dose).
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; less than 10% of the absorbed portion is metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to sucralose or any excipients in the formulation.
Drug Interactions
General
No significant drug interactions reported due to minimal systemic absorption.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C (86°F), away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Sucralose has a very high safety margin. Even at very high doses, it is generally well-tolerated. No specific antidote is available; treatment would be symptomatic if any rare reaction occurs.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation within the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI). Consult a healthcare provider if there are concerns.
