Description
Overview of the medicine
Sucramax 1 gm Suspension is an anti-ulcerant medicine containing Sucralfate, used for the treatment of duodenal ulcers, gastric ulcers, and gastritis. It forms a protective barrier over the ulcer site.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 gram (10 ml) four times daily, one hour before meals and at bedtime.
Elderly
Same as adult dose, adjust if severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment due to aluminum content. Consider lower doses or alternative if accumulation of aluminum is a concern.
How to Take
Administer orally, preferably one hour before meals and at bedtime. Do not take antacids within 30 minutes before or after sucralfate. Shake well before use.
Mechanism of Action
Sucralfate works by binding to ulcerated tissue and forming a protective barrier that shields the ulcer from acid, pepsin, and bile salts. This allows the ulcer to heal.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Local action starts within 1-2 hours
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces; minimal absorbed portion excreted in urine
Half life
Approximately 6-8 hours for the minimal absorbed portion
Absorption
Minimally absorbed systemically (less than 5%)
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to sucralfate or any components.
Drug Interactions
Antacids
Avoid taking antacids within 30 minutes before or after sucralfate as they may interfere with its binding.
Warfarin
Potential for reduced absorption. Monitor INR.
Tetracyclines
May reduce absorption. Administer at least 2 hours apart.
Fluoroquinolones (e.g., Ciprofloxacin)
Sucralfate can reduce the absorption of fluoroquinolones. Administer at least 2 hours apart.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C), protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Overdose is rare due to minimal systemic absorption. Management is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Minimal systemic absorption suggests low risk in lactation, but consult a doctor.
