Description
Overview of the medicine
Sucrasol 1 gm Suspension is used for the treatment and maintenance of duodenal ulcers and gastric ulcers. It forms a protective barrier over the ulcer surface.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Duodenal ulcer: 1 gm four times daily (one hour before each meal and at bedtime) or 2 gm twice daily (one hour before breakfast and at bedtime). Duration typically 4-8 weeks. Gastric ulcer: 1 gm four times daily.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage. Use with caution in elderly patients with renal impairment due to aluminum content.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution due to the risk of aluminum accumulation. Monitor phosphate levels and avoid prolonged use or high doses.
How to Take
Shake the suspension well before use. Take on an empty stomach, usually one hour before meals and at bedtime. Do not take antacids within 30 minutes before or after Sucralfate.
Mechanism of Action
Sucralfate works by binding to ulcerated tissue and forming a protective barrier that shields the ulcer from acid, pepsin, and bile salts, thereby promoting healing.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours for protective effect.
Excretion
The small absorbed portion is primarily excreted in urine as unchanged drug within 48 hours; unabsorbed drug is excreted in feces.
Half life
Systemic half-life is not clinically significant due to minimal absorption.
Absorption
Minimally absorbed systemically (less than 5% of administered dose).
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized by the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to sucralfate or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Antacids
Concurrent use may reduce the binding affinity of sucralfate to the ulcer site. Administer antacids at least 30 minutes before or after sucralfate.
Tetracyclines
Reduced absorption. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Phenytoin, Digoxin, Theophylline, Warfarin
Reduced absorption. Administer sucralfate at least 2 hours before or after these drugs.
Fluoroquinolones (e.g., Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin)
Sucralfate can reduce the absorption of fluoroquinolones. Administer sucralfate at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after fluoroquinolones.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is rare due to minimal systemic absorption. Symptoms are usually minimal, primarily constipation. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown a risk, but human studies are lacking. Use only if clearly needed. It is not known if sucralfate is excreted in human milk; use with caution during breastfeeding.
