Description
Overview of the medicine
Sulfacol 500 mg Tablet is a sulfonamide antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical dose is 1-2 grams orally, 2-3 times daily, depending on the infection severity. Max 4g/day.
Elderly
Dose adjustments may be necessary due to potential renal impairment; monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Reduce dosage; specific adjustments based on creatinine clearance. e.g., CrCl 15-30 mL/min: half usual dose; CrCl <15 mL/min: avoid or significantly reduce.
How to Take
Take orally with a full glass of water, with or without food. Ensure adequate hydration to prevent crystalluria.
Mechanism of Action
Sulfonamides inhibit bacterial dihydrofolate synthase, an enzyme necessary for the synthesis of folic acid. This interferes with bacterial DNA and RNA synthesis, leading to bacteriostatic action.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects typically observed within 1-2 days of starting treatment.
Excretion
Mainly excreted by the kidneys, primarily as metabolites and some unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 7-12 hours for sulfamethoxazole, varying with renal function.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by N4-acetylation and glucuronidation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides
- •Severe renal or hepatic impairment
- •Porphyria
- •Pregnancy (especially near term) and lactation
- •Infants under 2 months of age
Drug Interactions

Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, crystalluria, hematuria, and oliguria. Treatment involves gastric lavage, forced diuresis with alkalinization of urine, and symptomatic supportive care.
