Description
Overview of the medicine
Sunkist 250 mg Chewable Tablet is a vitamin C supplement used to prevent or treat low levels of vitamin C. It acts as an antioxidant and supports immune function.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For general supplementation: 250-500 mg daily. For deficiency (scurvy): 250-1000 mg daily in divided doses until saturation.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage; caution with high doses in individuals with impaired renal function due to increased risk of oxalate stone formation.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; high doses may increase the risk of oxalate kidney stone formation. Consult a doctor for appropriate dosage adjustments.
How to Take
Chew the tablet thoroughly before swallowing. It can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Ascorbic acid is an essential water-soluble vitamin required for collagen formation, tissue repair, and the enzymatic production of certain neurotransmitters. It is a potent antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative damage, and plays a crucial role in immune system function and iron absorption.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Relatively rapid, with peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-3 hours.
Excretion
Excreted primarily by the kidneys, with unmetabolized ascorbic acid and its metabolites appearing in the urine. Renal excretion increases with higher doses.
Half life
Approximately 10-20 days at low body saturation, but much shorter (around 30 minutes) at higher doses due to rapid renal excretion.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the small intestine, by an active transport mechanism. Absorption is dose-dependent, decreasing with increasing doses.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites, primarily dehydroascorbic acid and then further to 2,3-diketogulonic acid and oxalate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid or any component of the formulation
- Hemochromatosis or other conditions with increased iron overload (high doses of Vitamin C can increase iron absorption)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Very high doses of Vitamin C might theoretically interfere with anticoagulant therapy, although clinical significance for 250mg is low.
Deferoxamine
Concurrent use may enhance iron toxicity, especially for cardiac effects. Avoid combination.
Oral Contraceptives
May lead to lower plasma levels of ascorbic acid.
Aluminium-containing Antacids
Ascorbic acid can increase the absorption of aluminum from antacids, especially in patients with renal impairment.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is generally non-toxic. High doses (over 2000 mg/day) may cause gastrointestinal disturbances (e.g., diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps) and increase the risk of oxalate kidney stone formation in susceptible individuals. Management is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation at recommended daily allowances. For high doses, consult a healthcare provider.
