Description
Overview of the medicine
Suvirus 400 mg tablet is an antiviral medication primarily used for the treatment of certain viral infections. It acts by inhibiting the replication of specific viruses, thereby reducing the viral load and helping the body to fight off the infection.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial loading dose: 1600 mg (4 tablets) orally twice daily on Day 1. Maintenance dose: 600 mg (1.5 tablets, typically given as 2 tablets once and 1 tablet on another administration to make 600mg) orally twice daily from Day 2 to Day 5-10, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required for elderly patients with normal renal and hepatic function. Caution advised with impaired organ function.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment necessary for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min) due to limited data.
How to Take
Take Suvirus 400 mg tablets orally, with or without food. Swallow the tablets whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablets. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if you start to feel better.
Mechanism of Action
Suvirus is a nucleoside analog that selectively inhibits viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), an enzyme essential for viral replication. Once intracellularly metabolized into its active phosphorylated form (Suvirus-RTP), it mimics natural purine nucleosides and is incorporated into nascent viral RNA strands, leading to premature chain termination and inhibition of viral RNA synthesis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antiviral effects typically observed within 24-48 hours of initiation.
Excretion
Mainly excreted renally, with a small portion eliminated via feces.
Half life
Plasma elimination half-life is approximately 2-5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by aldehyde oxidase and xanthine oxidase, with some contribution from CYP450 enzymes. Converted to its active phosphorylated form intracellularly.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Suvirus or any component of the formulation
- Pregnancy and lactation (due to potential teratogenicity and excretion into breast milk)
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min) without careful risk-benefit assessment
Drug Interactions
Theophylline
May increase theophylline levels; monitor and adjust dose if necessary.
Anticancer drugs
Increased risk of myelosuppression with concomitant use.
Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6)
High doses may interfere with Suvirus efficacy; avoid co-administration if possible.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, no specific antidote is available. Management should be symptomatic and supportive. Monitor vital signs and clinical status. Hemodialysis may be considered in severe cases, although its efficacy in removing Suvirus is not well established.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Suvirus is contraindicated during pregnancy due to potential teratogenic effects. Effective contraception must be used by women of childbearing potential during treatment and for a specified period after. It is also contraindicated during lactation as it may be excreted in breast milk. Breastfeeding should be discontinued if treatment is necessary.

Lab Monitoring
- Liver function tests (ALT, AST) at baseline and periodically during treatment
- Complete blood count (CBC) if prolonged treatment or signs of myelosuppression
- Renal function tests (Creatinine, BUN) in patients with pre-existing renal impairment
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of completing the full prescribed course to prevent viral resistance.
- Counsel female patients of childbearing potential on the absolute necessity of effective contraception.
- Monitor liver function tests, especially in patients with pre-existing hepatic conditions.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Do not stop taking the medicine prematurely, even if symptoms improve.
- Report any new or worsening side effects to your doctor immediately.
