Description
Overview of the medicine
Suvo 10 mg Tablet contains Escitalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. It helps to improve mood and feelings of well-being.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose is 10 mg once daily, may be increased to a maximum of 20 mg daily after at least one week.
Elderly
A lower initial dose (e.g., 5 mg once daily) may be considered, maximum 10 mg daily.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment generally needed for mild to moderate impairment; caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Take orally once daily, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Escitalopram selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) in the brain, thereby increasing the concentration of serotonin in the synaptic cleft. This leads to enhanced serotonergic neurotransmission.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Initial antidepressant effects may be seen within 1-2 weeks, full effect within 4-6 weeks.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via urine, with some fecal excretion.
Half life
Approximately 27-32 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, not significantly affected by food.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by CYP3A4, CYP2C19, and CYP2D6 to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to escitalopram or any component of the formulation.
- Concomitant use with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of discontinuing an MAOI.
- Concomitant use with pimozide.
Drug Interactions
MAOIs
Increased risk of serotonin syndrome.
Pimozide
Contraindicated due to QT prolongation risk.
Warfarin
May alter anticoagulant effects; monitor INR.
NSAIDs/Aspirin
Increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.
Serotonergic drugs (e.g., triptans, tramadol, other SSRIs, SNRIs)
Increased risk of serotonin syndrome.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include dizziness, tremor, agitation, somnolence, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, and rarely, seizures or serotonin syndrome. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Maintain an open airway, monitor cardiac and vital signs. Activated charcoal may be considered. There is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Neonates exposed to SSRIs late in the third trimester have developed complications requiring prolonged hospitalization, respiratory support, and tube feeding. Escitalopram is excreted in human milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers.
