Description
Overview of the medicine
Suvotol 10 mg Tablet contains Suvotol, a selective beta-1 adrenergic receptor blocker, used to treat hypertension, angina pectoris, and certain cardiac arrhythmias. It helps to lower blood pressure and reduce the heart's workload.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initially 10 mg once daily, may be increased to 20 mg once daily after 1-2 weeks if necessary. Maximum 40 mg daily.
Elderly
Lower initial dose, e.g., 5 mg once daily, with gradual titration based on response and tolerability.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required. For CrCl < 35 mL/min, reduce dose by 50% or extend dosing interval.
How to Take
Take orally once daily, preferably at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without food. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Suvotol selectively blocks beta-1 adrenergic receptors, primarily in the heart. This reduces heart rate, myocardial contractility, and cardiac output, leading to a decrease in blood pressure. It also reduces renin release from the kidneys.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours
Excretion
Mainly renal excretion, both as unchanged drug and metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 6-9 hours
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with bioavailability around 50-60% due to first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic metabolism, with some active metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Severe bradycardia (heart rate < 50 bpm)
- Second or third-degree atrioventricular (AV) block
- Decompensated heart failure
- Cardiogenic shock
- Sick sinus syndrome
Drug Interactions
Clonidine
Risk of rebound hypertension if clonidine is withdrawn abruptly while taking Suvotol.
Digitalis Glycosides
Increased risk of bradycardia and AV block.
NSAIDs (e.g., Ibuprofen)
May reduce the antihypertensive effect of Suvotol.
Calcium Channel Blockers (e.g., Verapamil, Diltiazem)
Increased risk of bradycardia and hypotension. Monitor heart rate and blood pressure.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include severe bradycardia, hypotension, acute heart failure, and bronchospasm. Management involves supportive measures, gastric lavage, activated charcoal, and intravenous atropine for bradycardia, glucagon for hypotension, and inotropes for heart failure.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus. Small amounts may pass into breast milk; use with caution during lactation. Consult a doctor.
