Overview of the medicine
Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including pneumonia, sinusitis, skin infections, and urinary tract infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 500 mg once daily for 7-14 days depending on the infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment needed based on age alone, but renal function should be considered.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required for creatinine clearance < 50 mL/min.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food, usually once daily. Do not take with antacids containing magnesium or aluminum, sucralfate, or iron supplements.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination.

Storage

Symptoms may include CNS symptoms (confusion, hallucinations, tremors, convulsions), QT prolongation. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should only be used if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Excreted in breast milk, so caution is advised; discontinuation of nursing or the drug may be necessary.
