Description
Overview of the medicine
Tasso 80 mg Tablet contains Telmisartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients aged 55 years or older at high risk of cardiovascular disease.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For hypertension: The usual recommended starting dose is 40 mg once daily. The dose may be increased to a maximum of 80 mg once daily if necessary. For cardiovascular risk reduction: 80 mg once daily.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for patients with mild to moderate renal impairment. For severe renal impairment or hemodialysis, caution is advised; lower doses may be considered.
How to Take
Tasso 80 mg Tablet should be taken orally once daily with or without food. It is preferable to take the tablet at the same time each day.
Mechanism of Action
Telmisartan selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor, which is found in many tissues (e.g., vascular smooth muscle, adrenal gland). This blockade inhibits the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II, leading to vasodilation, reduced blood pressure, and decreased sodium and water retention.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Blood pressure lowering effect is evident within 3 hours, full effect generally seen within 4-8 weeks.
Excretion
Excreted almost exclusively in the feces, mainly as unchanged drug and glucuronide conjugate.
Half life
Approximately 20-24 hours, supporting once-daily dosing.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with peak plasma concentrations occurring 0.5-1 hour after oral administration. Absolute bioavailability is dose-dependent (approx. 42% for 40 mg, 58% for 160 mg).
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily conjugated to its glucuronide metabolite.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
- Second and third trimesters of pregnancy.
- Biliary obstructive disorders.
- Severe hepatic impairment.
- Concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes mellitus or renal impairment (GFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m²).
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Increased plasma concentrations of digoxin.
Lithium
Reversible increases in serum lithium concentrations and toxicity have been reported. Monitor lithium levels.
NSAIDs (e.g., Aspirin, Ibuprofen)
May reduce the antihypertensive effect of telmisartan and increase the risk of renal function deterioration.
Diuretics and other antihypertensive agents
May have an additive hypotensive effect.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include hypotension, dizziness, and tachycardia or bradycardia. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis is not effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, due to risk of fetal harm. Not recommended during breastfeeding due to potential risk to the infant.

- Blood pressure monitoring
Doctor Notes
- Monitor blood pressure and renal function regularly, especially in elderly patients or those with pre-existing renal impairment.
- Advise patients about potential for dizziness, particularly during initiation of therapy.
- Counsel patients on lifestyle modifications to enhance therapeutic outcomes.
