Description
Overview of the medicine
Tazid (Ceftazidime) is a broad-spectrum, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including severe and hospital-acquired infections. It is administered parenterally.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usual adult dose is 1 g IV or IM every 8 to 12 hours. For severe infections, 2 g IV every 8 hours may be necessary.
Elderly
Dosage should be adjusted based on renal function, similar to adult renal impairment guidelines.
Renal_impairment
Dosage must be reduced significantly based on creatinine clearance. For example, creatinine clearance 31-50 mL/min: 1 g every 12 hours; 16-30 mL/min: 1 g every 24 hours.
How to Take
For intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) administration. For IV administration, it can be given as a slow injection over 3-5 minutes or as an infusion over 20-60 minutes. Reconstitute with sterile water for injection or compatible diluent.
Mechanism of Action
Ceftazidime is a bactericidal agent that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to disruption of the cell wall and ultimately bacterial cell lysis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid (within minutes of IV administration)
Excretion
Primarily excreted by the kidneys via glomerular filtration; approximately 80-90% of the dose is excreted unchanged in urine within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 1.8 to 2.5 hours (in adults with normal renal function)
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed after intramuscular (IM) administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized; excreted largely unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to ceftazidime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., penicillin).
Drug Interactions
Aminoglycosides
Increased risk of nephrotoxicity.
Chloramphenicol
May have antagonistic effects with beta-lactam antibiotics.
Oral Anticoagulants
Ceftazidime may potentiate the anticoagulant effect of warfarin.
Loop Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
May increase the risk of nephrotoxicity when co-administered with cephalosporins.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children. Reconstituted solution storage depends on the diluent used and should be used promptly.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include convulsions, encephalopathy, asterixis, and neuromuscular excitability. Management should be symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis may be useful in removing Ceftazidime from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Ceftazidime is excreted in small amounts into breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.

Lab Monitoring
- Renal function tests (serum creatinine, BUN) especially in patients with pre-existing renal impairment or receiving concomitant nephrotoxic drugs.
- Liver function tests (ALT, AST) if treatment is prolonged.
- Complete blood count (CBC) to monitor for hematological abnormalities.
Doctor Notes
- Consider culture and susceptibility testing before initiating treatment.
- Adjust dose in renal impairment. Monitor for C. difficile-associated diarrhea.
- Be aware of potential cross-reactivity in patients with penicillin allergy.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the entire prescribed course of treatment, even if symptoms improve earlier.
- Report any severe or persistent side effects to your doctor immediately.
- Inform your doctor about any allergies, especially to penicillin or other antibiotics.
- Do not share this medication with others.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed.
Driving Precautions
Ceftazidime can cause dizziness. Patients should be advised to exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until they know how the medication affects them.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good hygiene to prevent further infections.
- Drink plenty of fluids unless otherwise advised by your doctor.
