Description
Overview of the medicine
Td vaccine is a combination vaccine used to protect against tetanus and diphtheria. It contains weakened forms of the toxins produced by the bacteria that cause these diseases, stimulating the body's immune system to produce protective antibodies.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
A single 0.5 ml intramuscular dose as a booster, typically every 10 years.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required.
How to Take
Administer intramuscularly, preferably into the deltoid muscle. Do not inject intravenously, intradermally, or subcutaneously.
Mechanism of Action
The vaccine contains inactivated tetanus and diphtheria toxoids which, when administered, stimulate the immune system to produce specific antibodies. These antibodies provide active immunity against the toxins produced by Clostridium tetani and Corynebacterium diphtheriae, thereby preventing the diseases.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Protective immunity typically develops within 2-4 weeks after vaccination.
Excretion
Not applicable for vaccine components.
Half life
Not applicable for vaccine components; antibody levels persist for several years.
Absorption
Not applicable in typical pharmacokinetic sense; antigens are presented to immune cells at the injection site.
Metabolism
Antigens are processed by antigen-presenting cells.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of Td vaccine or any vaccine component
- •Encephalopathy within 7 days after a previous dose of diphtheria or tetanus toxoid containing vaccine not attributable to another cause
Drug Interactions
Corticosteroids
May reduce the immune response to the vaccine.
Immunosuppressants
May reduce the immune response to the vaccine.
Storage
Store at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Do not freeze. Protect from light.
Overdose
Overdose is highly unlikely with a vaccine. If a larger than recommended dose is administered, monitor for increased local reactions or systemic adverse events.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Td vaccine is generally considered safe and recommended during pregnancy, especially if tetanus protection is needed. It is also safe for use during lactation.
