Description
Overview of the medicine
Tembrox 15 mg syrup contains Ambroxol Hydrochloride, a mucolytic agent used to treat respiratory diseases associated with viscid or excessive mucus. It helps to thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults: Initially 10 ml (30 mg) three times daily for 2-3 days, then 5 ml (15 mg) three times daily. Maximum daily dose: 120 mg.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required for elderly patients, but caution is advised in cases of severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
In severe renal impairment, dose frequency may need to be reduced or the dose lowered. Consult a doctor.
How to Take
Tembrox syrup is for oral administration. It can be taken with or without food. Use the provided measuring cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol works by stimulating serous glands, thinning and fragmenting mucopolysaccharide fibers, and enhancing mucociliary clearance. This action reduces mucus viscosity and improves its transport out of the respiratory tract.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within approximately 30 minutes after oral administration.
Excretion
Mainly via the kidneys; about 90% as metabolites and 10% as unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 10 hours for the terminal elimination half-life.
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed orally, with peak plasma concentrations achieved within 0.5-3 hours.
Metabolism
Extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver, leading to inactive metabolites (e.g., glucuronide conjugates).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or any other component of the formulation.
- Patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers (use with caution, as it may affect the gastric mucosa).
Drug Interactions
Antitussives (cough suppressants)
Concomitant use with antitussives may lead to a dangerous accumulation of secretions due to the impaired cough reflex. Avoid co-administration.
Antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin)
Ambroxol can increase the penetration of these antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their therapeutic effect.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Management is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and induced emesis are not generally recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Studies in animals have shown adverse effects on the foetus at high doses. Should be avoided during the first trimester. Use in later trimesters only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Ambroxol is excreted into breast milk; therefore, use with caution during lactation and only if recommended by a doctor.
