Description
Overview of the medicine
Temzinc-Plus Syrup is a multivitamin and mineral supplement containing Zinc and a combination of B-complex vitamins. It is used to prevent and treat vitamin and mineral deficiencies, especially during periods of increased demand or inadequate dietary intake.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) 1-2 times daily or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dose or as directed by physician.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required in severe renal impairment. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Oral. Can be taken with or without food. For best absorption and to minimize gastrointestinal upset, it is often recommended to take with food.
Mechanism of Action
Zinc is an essential trace element vital for immune function, wound healing, and cell growth. B-complex vitamins (Thiamine, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine, Nicotinamide, Pantothenic acid) play crucial roles as coenzymes in various metabolic processes, including energy production, red blood cell formation, and nervous system function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic improvement may be noticed within days to weeks of consistent use, depending on the severity of the deficiency.
Excretion
Zinc is mainly excreted via feces, with some renal excretion. B-complex vitamins are primarily excreted in urine.
Half life
Varies for each component. Zinc has a relatively long half-life (e.g., 2-4 hours for plasma, but tissue retention is longer). Water-soluble B vitamins have short half-lives and are not stored extensively.
Absorption
Zinc is absorbed primarily in the small intestine, with absorption varying based on dietary factors. B-complex vitamins are readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Zinc is metabolized and primarily bound to proteins. B-vitamins are coenzymes in various metabolic pathways and are largely excreted unchanged or as metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the syrup.
- Severe renal impairment (for higher doses of zinc).
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
Some diuretics (e.g., thiazides) can increase urinary excretion of zinc.
Penicillamine
Zinc may reduce the absorption of penicillamine. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Tetracyclines & Quinolones
Zinc can decrease the absorption of tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics. Administer zinc at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after these antibiotics.
Other B-vitamin supplements
Avoid taking with other high-dose B-vitamin supplements unless directed by a physician to prevent potential overdose of individual vitamins.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light. Do not freeze. Keep away from heat.
Overdose
Symptoms of acute zinc overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and lethargy. Chronic overdose can lead to copper deficiency and anemia. B-vitamin overdose is generally less toxic, as they are water-soluble and excess is excreted. Management is symptomatic and supportive; discontinue use and seek medical attention.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and beneficial during pregnancy and lactation for treating or preventing deficiencies, especially given the increased nutritional requirements. However, consult a physician before use.
