Description
Overview of the medicine
Terfun 1% Cream contains Terbinafine, an antifungal agent used to treat various fungal skin infections such as ringworm, athlete's foot, and jock itch. It works by killing the fungi that cause these infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply to the affected area once or twice daily for 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the infection type. Continue for a few days after symptoms clear.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For topical use only. Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly before applying a thin layer of cream. Gently rub it in. Wash hands immediately after application.
Mechanism of Action
Terbinafine inhibits squalene epoxidase, a key enzyme in fungal sterol biosynthesis. This leads to an accumulation of squalene within the fungal cell and a deficiency of ergosterol, resulting in fungal cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement usually begins within a few days of treatment.
Excretion
Not significantly excreted systemically due to minimal absorption.
Half life
Not relevant for topical application due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
When applied topically, less than 5% of the dose is absorbed, resulting in very low systemic exposure.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism due to low absorption.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to terbinafine or any of the excipients.
- Not for ophthalmic, oral, or intravaginal use.
Drug Interactions
Systemic Medications
Minimal systemic absorption means topical terbinafine is unlikely to cause clinically significant drug interactions with systemically administered medications.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to poor absorption. If applied excessively, wipe off the excess cream and wash the area. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman, consult a doctor.
