Description
Overview of the medicine
Tetrabez 125 mg Tablet contains Doxycycline, a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 125 mg orally once daily, or as directed by physician. For severe infections, higher doses may be required (e.g., 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily).
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment typically required, but monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary, as it is primarily excreted non-renally.
How to Take
Take orally with a full glass of water, preferably in an upright position to prevent esophageal irritation. Can be taken with food to minimize gastrointestinal upset, but avoid dairy products, antacids, or iron supplements within 2-3 hours of dose.
Mechanism of Action
Doxycycline inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing the attachment of aminoacyl-tRNA to the ribosomal A site, thereby inhibiting bacterial growth.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects typically seen within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in faeces as inactive chelates, with a smaller portion excreted in urine.
Half life
12-22 hours
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, even in the presence of food or milk, though absorption may be slightly reduced by dairy products, antacids, or iron preparations.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily inactivated by chelation in the gut.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
- •Severe hepatic impairment
- •Pregnancy (especially second and third trimesters)
- •Lactation
- •Children under 8 years of age (due to potential for permanent tooth discoloration and bone growth inhibition)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin

Penicillins
May interfere with the bactericidal effect of penicillins.
Methotrexate
May increase methotrexate toxicity.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives.
Antacids (aluminum, calcium, magnesium containing), Iron preparations, Bismuth subsalicylate
Can decrease the absorption of doxycycline.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
