Description
Overview of the medicine
Tobirax-03 eye drop contains Tobramycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, used to treat bacterial infections of the eye such as bacterial conjunctivitis and keratitis. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Mild to moderate infection: 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 4 hours. Severe infection: 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every hour until improvement, then reduce frequency.
Elderly
Same as adults. No specific dosage adjustment is generally required.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary for topical ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid to form a pouch, instill the prescribed number of drops, then close eye gently. Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface to avoid contamination. Wash hands before and after use.
Mechanism of Action
Tobramycin exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. This leads to cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action, typically within minutes to hours for symptomatic relief.
Excretion
If systemically absorbed (which is minimal), it is primarily excreted unchanged in the urine. Local elimination from ocular tissues.
Half life
Systemic half-life is not clinically significant due to minimal absorption. Local half-life in ocular tissues varies.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after topical ocular administration. High concentrations are achieved in ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in the eye or systemically after topical application.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to tobramycin or any other aminoglycoside antibiotics
- •Hypersensitivity to any excipients in the formulation
- •Viral or fungal eye infections (unless co-treated)
Drug Interactions
Systemic aminoglycosides
Although systemic absorption is minimal, theoretical risk of increased systemic toxicity (e.g., ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity) if used concurrently with systemic aminoglycosides, especially in patients with impaired renal function.
Other topical ophthalmic medications
If using multiple eye drops, administer them at least 5 minutes apart to prevent wash-out.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C), away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical ophthalmic use. If excess drops are accidentally instilled, the eye may be flushed with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother, consult a doctor.
