Description
Overview of the medicine
Tobramycin 0.3% Eye Ointment is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as bacterial conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and keratitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount (approximately 1/2 inch ribbon) into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) 2-3 times daily for mild to moderate infections. For severe infections, apply every 3-4 hours, reducing frequency as infection improves.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment due to minimal systemic absorption from topical ophthalmic administration.
How to Take
Wash hands thoroughly before and after application. Pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket, apply a small ribbon of ointment into the pocket, and then close the eye gently. Avoid touching the applicator tip to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, leading to misreading of mRNA and production of non-functional proteins, ultimately resulting in bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action at the site of application.
Excretion
Any systemically absorbed drug is primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical ophthalmic use due to negligible systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs following topical ophthalmic administration.
Metabolism
Systemic metabolism is negligible following topical ophthalmic application.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tobramycin or any other component of the formulation.
- Hypersensitivity to other aminoglycoside antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Other Ophthalmic Preparations
If using other ophthalmic medications, allow at least 5-10 minutes between applications to prevent wash-out. Avoid concurrent use of other topical aminoglycoside antibiotics.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical ophthalmic application. If swallowed, supportive care should be provided.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother, although systemic absorption is minimal.
