Description
Overview of the medicine
Tolfamax 200 mg Tablet contains Tolperisone Hydrochloride, a centrally acting muscle relaxant used to treat increased muscle tone and spasms associated with various neurological conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, myelopathy, and other spastic conditions. It helps to alleviate pain and improve mobility.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 150-450 mg daily in 3 divided doses. For Tolfamax 200 mg, this could mean one tablet 1-2 times daily, adjusted according to individual response and tolerance. Should be taken after meals.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but use with caution and adjust based on renal/hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction may be necessary in patients with severe renal impairment. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally after meals to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort and enhance bioavailability. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Tolperisone acts on the central nervous system, primarily by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium and calcium channels. It stabilizes neuronal membranes, reducing polysynaptic and monosynaptic reflexes, thereby decreasing muscle hypertonicity and spasticity. It does not cause significant sedation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via the kidneys as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 - 2.5 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, but undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by CYP2D6.
