Description
Overview of the medicine
Travoprost 0.004% eye drop is used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It works by increasing the outflow of fluid from the eye.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Apply one drop in the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. If more than one ophthalmic product is being used, administer at least 5 minutes apart.
Mechanism of Action
Travoprost is a prostaglandin F2α analogue. It selectively binds to the prostaglandin FP receptor, which increases uveoscleral outflow of aqueous humor, thereby reducing intraocular pressure (IOP).
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Approximately 2 hours
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys as inactive metabolites.
Half life
The active free acid form has a short systemic half-life (approximately 45 minutes) but sustained local action.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed through the cornea and metabolized to its active free acid form. Systemic absorption is minimal.
Metabolism
Hydrolyzed by esterases in the cornea to the active travoprost free acid. Further metabolized by beta-oxidation to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to travoprost or any component of the formulation.
- •Pregnancy (relative contraindication due to potential risk)
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic medications
If more than one topical ophthalmic drug is being used, they should be administered at least 5 minutes apart.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical ocular administration. If overdose occurs, flush the eye with lukewarm water. Symptomatic and supportive treatment may be provided if systemic effects occur, though these are rare.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
