Description
Overview of the medicine
Trugain-2 Scalp Solution contains Minoxidil 2% and is used to stimulate hair growth in individuals with androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness and female pattern hair loss). It helps to reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles, increase their size, and extend the hair's growth phase.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply 1 ml of Trugain-2 Scalp Solution twice daily to the affected areas of the scalp. The total dose should not exceed 2 ml per day. Use for a minimum of 4 months for visible results.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustments are recommended for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustments are recommended for topical application.
How to Take
Ensure scalp and hair are completely dry. Apply 1 ml (about 10 sprays) to the affected areas of the scalp. Gently massage the solution into the scalp. Wash hands thoroughly after application. Do not wash hair for at least 4 hours after application.
Mechanism of Action
Minoxidil is a potassium channel opener that causes hyperpolarization of cell membranes. Its exact mechanism for hair growth is not fully understood, but it is believed to widen blood vessels, which improves blood flow to hair follicles, and may also stimulate hair follicle cells directly, prolonging the anagen (growth) phase of hair and leading to thicker, longer hair.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Hair growth stimulation usually requires 4 months of twice-daily application for visible results.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in urine.
Half life
Systemically absorbed minoxidil has a half-life of approximately 18-28 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 1.4% of the topically applied dose is absorbed systemically. Systemic absorption can be increased by increased dose, frequency of administration, or damaged skin barrier.
Metabolism
Systemically absorbed minoxidil is primarily metabolized by conjugation with glucuronic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to minoxidil or any other ingredients
- Scalp conditions such as sunburn, infection, irritation, or pain
- Concomitant use with other topical scalp medications
- Children under 18 years of age
- Sudden/patchy hair loss or hair loss of unknown reason
Drug Interactions
Guanethidine
Risk of orthostatic hypotension may be increased.
Other topical agents
Avoid concomitant use with other topical medications (e.g., corticosteroids, retinoids, petrolatum) as they may alter minoxidil absorption.
Storage
Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Accidental ingestion or application to a large surface area of the scalp could lead to systemic effects of minoxidil, such as hypotension, tachycardia, fluid retention, and dizziness. In such cases, seek immediate medical attention. Treatment is supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Minoxidil is not recommended for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding due to potential systemic absorption and unknown effects on the fetus/infant. Consult a doctor.
