Description
Overview of the medicine
Ulsec 1000 mg Tablet contains Sucralfate, a medication used to treat and prevent stomach and duodenal ulcers. It works by forming a protective barrier over the ulcer site, shielding it from acid and enzymes.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 gram (1 tablet) four times daily, one hour before meals and at bedtime, or 2 grams twice daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment needed, but caution in patients with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution due to potential aluminum accumulation. Consider lower doses or alternative therapy.
How to Take
Take orally on an empty stomach, typically one hour before meals and at bedtime. Do not chew or crush the tablet; swallow whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Sucralfate works by forming a viscous gel that selectively binds to ulcerated tissue, creating a protective barrier against acid, pepsin, and bile salts. This allows the ulcer to heal by protecting it from further irritation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces.
Half life
Not well defined due to minimal absorption; eliminated rapidly.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption (<5%).
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sucralfate or any components of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Antacids, H2 receptor antagonists, Proton Pump Inhibitors
May reduce the efficacy of sucralfate by altering gastric pH, which is necessary for sucralfate activation. Administer sucralfate at least 30 minutes apart.
Tetracyclines, Fluoroquinolones (e.g., Ciprofloxacin, Ofloxacin), Phenytoin, Digoxin, Warfarin, Ketoconazole
Sucralfate can bind to these drugs in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing their absorption. Administer these medications at least 2 hours before or after sucralfate.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose of sucralfate is generally well-tolerated, with very few systemic effects reported due to minimal absorption. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic. Gastric lavage may be considered if recent ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm, but adequate studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use only if clearly needed. Minimal systemic absorption suggests low risk during lactation, but consult a doctor.
