Description
Overview of the medicine
Unikon 120 mg Syrup contains Levocarnitine, an amino acid derivative that plays a crucial role in energy metabolism. It helps transport long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria for energy production. It is used in the treatment of primary and secondary carnitine deficiency and as an adjunct in various metabolic disorders.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 1-3 grams (approx. 40-120 ml of Unikon 120 mg Syrup) daily, in 2-3 divided doses, or as directed by a physician. Doses should be individualized.
Elderly
Same as adults, with careful monitoring and individualized dosing as per physician's advice.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required, but use with caution and monitor carnitine levels in patients with severe renal impairment (not on dialysis).
How to Take
Unikon 120 mg Syrup should be taken orally. It can be taken with or without food. A measuring cup or spoon should be used for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Levocarnitine acts as a carrier molecule that transports long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane, enabling their beta-oxidation and subsequent energy production. It also facilitates the removal of acyl groups from the mitochondria, which can accumulate and become toxic.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Variable, with noticeable clinical effects usually observed within hours to days, depending on the indication.
Excretion
Mainly excreted by the kidneys, primarily as unchanged drug and its metabolites.
Half life
The terminal elimination half-life is approximately 17 hours after a single oral dose.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Oral bioavailability is approximately 15% due to first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism; primarily metabolized to acylcarnitines and other metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Levocarnitine or any component of the formulation.
- •Patients with end-stage renal disease not on dialysis (due to potential accumulation of metabolites).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Concurrent use may enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, requiring close monitoring of INR.
Thyroid Hormone
May inhibit the action of thyroid hormone. Monitor thyroid function if used concurrently.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is generally well-tolerated. Symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated if an overdose occurs. Gastrointestinal upset is the most likely symptom.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy and lactation should only be considered if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a physician before use.
