Description
Overview of the medicine
Univit-B 5 mg Tablet is a vitamin B6 supplement, essential for various metabolic functions, nerve health, and red blood cell formation. It helps in the proper functioning of the nervous system and immune system.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical daily dose for deficiency: 5-20 mg orally, once daily. For drug-induced neuropathy: 10-50 mg daily. For nausea in pregnancy: 10-25 mg, 3-4 times daily (as directed by physician).
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required for elderly patients, same as adults.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with water, with or without food. Follow your doctor's or pharmacist's instructions.
Mechanism of Action
Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) is converted to its active forms, pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) and pyridoxamine phosphate (PMP), which act as coenzymes in over 100 enzyme reactions, primarily involved in amino acid, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism, as well as neurotransmitter synthesis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Not acutely observable, benefits are seen with chronic supplementation.
Excretion
Excreted mainly in the urine as 4-pyridoxic acid and other inactive metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 15-20 days (for PLP).
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the jejunum. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Metabolized primarily in the liver to pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) and other active and inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Pyridoxine or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Levodopa
High doses of Pyridoxine (e.g., >5 mg) may decrease the efficacy of Levodopa, though this is less common with carbidopa/levodopa combinations.
Isoniazid
Isoniazid can cause Vitamin B6 deficiency; co-administration with Pyridoxine is often recommended to prevent neuropathy.
Hydralazine, Penicillamine, Oral Contraceptives
These drugs may increase the requirement for Pyridoxine.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is rare and generally not toxic. However, chronic intake of very high doses (e.g., >100-200 mg/day for prolonged periods) may lead to severe peripheral neuropathy.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation at recommended doses. Pyridoxine is often used to treat nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. Consult your doctor before taking any medication during these periods.

Numerous clinical trials have established the efficacy of pyridoxine in treating vitamin B6 deficiency and certain associated conditions. Studies also support its role in managing pregnancy-related nausea.
Lab Monitoring
- Plasma pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) levels may be monitored in cases of suspected deficiency or toxicity, though not routinely required.
Doctor Notes
- Assess patient's dietary intake and medical history for B6 deficiency risk factors.
- Advise against self-medication with high doses to avoid potential neuropathy.
- Consider B6 supplementation in patients on Isoniazid therapy.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the tablet as directed by your healthcare provider.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose without consulting a doctor.
