Description
Overview of the medicine
Uptech-go (child) Inhaler contains Salbutamol, a fast-acting bronchodilator used for the relief of bronchospasm in conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in children. It provides rapid relief from symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically for adults if specified 'child' inhaler, but standard Salbutamol is 1-2 puffs as needed, up to 4 times daily.
Elderly
Not typically for elderly if specified 'child' inhaler. For general Salbutamol, same as adults, with caution.
Children
For acute symptoms: 1 puff initially, increased to 2 puffs if required. For exercise-induced bronchospasm: 1-2 puffs 10-15 minutes before exercise. Max 8 puffs in 24 hours.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required, but use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment due to potential for increased systemic exposure.
How to Take
Administer by oral inhalation. Ensure proper inhaler technique. A spacer device is recommended for children to improve drug delivery and reduce side effects.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the smooth muscle of the bronchi, leading to relaxation of the bronchial smooth muscle and bronchodilation. This helps to open up the airways, making breathing easier.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
5-15 minutes after inhalation.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via urine, as unchanged drug and its metabolites.
Half life
4-6 hours (systemic half-life).
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the respiratory tract after inhalation, with some systemic absorption. A portion of the dose may be swallowed and absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the inhaler.
- Contraindicated in threatened abortion during the first or second trimesters of pregnancy.
Drug Interactions
Beta-blockers
May block the bronchodilatory effect of salbutamol and can cause severe bronchospasm in asthmatic patients. Concomitant use is generally contraindicated.
MAOIs and TCAs
Increased risk of cardiovascular adverse effects (e.g., tachycardia, arrhythmias) if salbutamol is used with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs).
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from direct sunlight and frost. Keep out of reach of children. Do not puncture or burn the canister, even when empty.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include tremor, headache, palpitations, tachycardia, and hypokalemia. Management involves symptomatic and supportive treatment. Cardiac monitoring may be necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether salbutamol is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.

WHO Essential Medicine
YesClinical Trials
Salbutamol has been extensively studied and is a well-established medication with numerous clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy and safety in treating bronchospasm across various age groups, including children.
Lab Monitoring
- Potassium levels (in cases of severe asthma or high doses due to risk of hypokalemia).
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize proper inhaler technique and the importance of using a spacer for pediatric patients.
- Advise patients that this is a 'reliever' medication and not a substitute for 'preventer' (maintenance) therapy.
- Educate on the signs of worsening asthma and when to seek urgent medical attention.
Patient Guidelines
- Always use with a spacer device for children.
- Ensure correct inhaler technique by watching a demonstration.
- Rinse mouth with water after each use to minimize throat irritation and fungal infections.
- Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
Missed Dose Advice
As this is a 'reliever' medication, take a dose when needed for symptoms. Do not take extra puffs to make up for a missed dose. If your child's symptoms worsen or don't improve, consult a doctor.
Driving Precautions
Salbutamol is unlikely to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if side effects like tremor or dizziness occur, caution should be exercised.
Lifestyle Advice
- Identify and avoid asthma triggers.
- Follow an individualized asthma action plan developed with your doctor.
- Maintain regular check-ups with a healthcare professional.
