Description
Overview of the medicine
Uzide 80 mg Tablet contains Furosemide, a potent loop diuretic used to treat edema associated with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney disease, as well as hypertension. It works by increasing the excretion of sodium, chloride, and water from the kidneys.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Edema: Initial 20-80 mg once daily, adjusted based on response. Max 600 mg/day. Hypertension: 40 mg twice daily.
Elderly
Start with lower doses (e.g., 20 mg daily) and titrate carefully due to increased sensitivity and potential for adverse effects.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment necessary; monitor fluid and electrolyte balance closely. Higher doses might be needed in severe impairment.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food. To prevent nocturia, take the last dose several hours before bedtime.
Mechanism of Action
Furosemide acts on the ascending limb of the loop of Henle in the kidney, inhibiting the reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions. This leads to increased excretion of water, sodium, chloride, and potassium, resulting in diuresis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Oral: 30-60 minutes; IV: 5 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly renal (unchanged drug and metabolites), some biliary.
Half life
30-120 minutes (can be prolonged in renal impairment).
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability varies but is typically 60-70%.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, with some renal metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Anuria (absence of urine production)
- Hepatic coma or pre-coma
- Severe electrolyte depletion
- Hypersensitivity to furosemide or sulfonamides
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Reduced lithium excretion, leading to increased lithium levels and toxicity.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of hypokalemia.
Antihypertensive agents
Potentiated hypotensive effect.
Aminoglycoside antibiotics
Increased risk of ototoxicity.
NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs)
May reduce the diuretic and antihypertensive effects of furosemide.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C), away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include profound diuresis, dehydration, electrolyte depletion (hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hypochloremia), hypotension, and hypovolemic shock. Treatment involves supportive measures, fluid and electrolyte replacement.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Furosemide is excreted in breast milk and may suppress lactation; use with caution or avoid during breastfeeding.

- Serum electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium)
- Renal function (BUN, creatinine)
- Blood glucose
- Liver function tests (in hepatic impairment)
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize close monitoring of fluid and electrolyte status, especially in elderly patients and those with pre-existing renal or hepatic impairment.
- Educate patients on symptoms of electrolyte imbalance and dehydration.
- Caution against concurrent use with nephrotoxic or ototoxic drugs.
- Consider potassium supplementation if hypokalemia develops.
Patient Guidelines
- Take as directed by your doctor.
- Do not stop taking without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better.
- Report any unusual side effects, especially severe dizziness, muscle cramps, or extreme thirst.
- Monitor your blood pressure and weight regularly if advised by your doctor.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose.
Driving Precautions
Furosemide may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or orthostatic hypotension, especially at the start of treatment or with dose changes. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.
Lifestyle Advice
- Limit salt intake as advised by your doctor.
- Maintain adequate fluid intake unless instructed otherwise.
- Avoid alcohol, which can worsen dizziness and dehydration.
- Regular exercise (as tolerated) can help manage underlying conditions.
