Description
Overview of the medicine
Uzu 10 mg Syrup contains Cetirizine Hydrochloride, a potent second-generation antihistamine, used for the relief of symptoms associated with allergic conditions such as hay fever, chronic urticaria, and allergic rhinitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg (5 ml) once daily, or 5 mg (2.5 ml) twice daily. Maximum 10 mg/day.
Elderly
5 mg (2.5 ml) once daily. Dosage adjustment may be required based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Creatinine clearance 31-60 ml/min: 5 mg (2.5 ml) once daily. Creatinine clearance 11-30 ml/min: 5 mg (2.5 ml) every other day. Less than 10 ml/min: Contraindicated.
How to Take
Oral administration. May be taken with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or oral syringe for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine selectively inhibits peripheral H1 receptors, thereby preventing the histamine-induced effects such as vasodilation, increased capillary permeability, and pruritus. It does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier, leading to fewer sedative effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
20-60 minutes
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys (about 60% unchanged drug in urine).
Half life
Approximately 8-12 hours in adults
Absorption
Rapidly and extensively absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or any piperazine derivatives
- Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 10 ml/min)
Drug Interactions
Ritonavir
Increases plasma concentration of cetirizine.
CNS depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives)
May enhance CNS depressant effects, leading to increased drowsiness.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, tachycardia, tremor, and urinary retention. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; no specific antidote. Gastric lavage may be considered soon after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk, so caution is advised for nursing mothers. Consult a doctor.
