Description
Overview of the medicine
Venterol 20 mg Tablet is a medication used to relieve symptoms of bronchospasm associated with respiratory conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, making breathing easier.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual adult dose is 20 mg orally, two to three times daily. Max 60 mg/day.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required, but caution is advised in elderly patients, starting with the lower end of the dosing range.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is typically required, but use with caution in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Venterol tablets should be taken orally, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Venterol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors primarily located in the bronchial smooth muscle. This stimulation leads to activation of adenyl cyclase, which increases intracellular levels of cyclic-3',5'-adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). Increased cAMP levels result in relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle and inhibition of mediator release from mast cells.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of bronchodilation typically occurs within 30 minutes to 1 hour after oral administration.
Excretion
Excreted mainly via urine, both as unchanged drug and metabolites. A small portion is excreted in feces.
Half life
Approximately 4-6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites through sulfation and glucuronidation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Venterol or any of its components.
- Severe cardiac disease (e.g., unstable angina, recent myocardial infarction).
- Uncontrolled hyperthyroidism.
Drug Interactions
Beta-blockers
May reduce the bronchodilator effect of Venterol and potentially cause severe bronchospasm.
Other sympathomimetics
Concomitant use may increase the risk of cardiovascular adverse effects.
Diuretics (e.g., furosemide)
May potentiate hypokalemia.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) and Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
May potentiate the cardiovascular effects of Venterol.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include tremor, palpitations, tachycardia, headache, and hypokalemia. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including discontinuation of the drug and careful monitoring of cardiac status and serum potassium levels.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Venterol should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown whether Venterol is excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
