Description
Overview of the medicine
Ventolex 4 mg Tablet contains Salbutamol, a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist. It is used to relieve symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, allowing them to open up and making breathing easier.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
4 mg, 3-4 times daily.
Elderly
Lower initial doses may be considered, usually 2 mg, 3-4 times daily.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Oral. Can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors primarily in the bronchial smooth muscles, leading to relaxation of these muscles and bronchodilation. It also inhibits the release of mast cell mediators such as histamine and leukotrienes, which are involved in allergic responses.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Oral: 30 minutes
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine, mainly as the active drug and its sulfate conjugate.
Half life
Systemic half-life is 4-6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Bioavailability is about 50%.
Metabolism
Undergoes extensive metabolism in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the formulation
- Threatened abortion during the first or second trimester of pregnancy
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
May cause ECG changes and hypokalemia, especially with high doses of beta-agonists.
MAOIs and TCAs
May potentiate the effect of salbutamol on the vascular system, increasing the risk of cardiovascular side effects.
Beta-blockers (e.g., Propranolol)
Can antagonize the effects of salbutamol, especially non-selective beta-blockers, leading to severe bronchospasm.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include tachycardia, tremors, headache, and hypokalemia. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, including discontinuing the drug and monitoring potassium levels.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Small amounts may be excreted in breast milk; use with caution during lactation.
