Description
Overview of the medicine
Vermid 400 mg Chewable Tablet contains Albendazole, an anthelmintic medication used to treat various parasitic worm infections. It is effective against intestinal worms and certain tissue parasites. The chewable form makes it easier for administration, especially for children and those with difficulty swallowing tablets.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Most intestinal nematode infections: 400 mg as a single dose. Strongyloidiasis/Taeniasis/Hydatid/Neurocysticercosis require different regimens (e.g., 400 mg twice daily for 3-28 days).
Elderly
Dosage adjustments are generally not necessary in the elderly unless significant renal or hepatic impairment is present.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is generally required for renal impairment, but caution is advised in severe cases.
How to Take
The chewable tablet should be chewed or crushed completely before swallowing. It can be taken with or without food, but taking it with a fatty meal can enhance absorption, especially for systemic infections.
Mechanism of Action
Albendazole selectively binds to and inhibits beta-tubulin polymerization in parasitic worms, leading to the disruption of their cytoplasmic microtubule formation. This impairs glucose uptake and cellular transport processes, ultimately depleting the parasite's energy reserves and causing its immobilization and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects typically observed within 1-3 days depending on the type of infection.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in the urine as metabolites (sulfoxide and sulfone forms), and some in bile/feces.
Half life
Albendazole sulfoxide: 8-12 hours.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the GI tract (<5% absorbed); absorption is increased when taken with a fatty meal.
Metabolism
Extensively and rapidly metabolized in the liver to its primary active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to albendazole or other benzimidazole derivatives
- •Pregnancy (especially first trimester)
- •Children under 6 years for neurocysticercosis (due to lack of data)
Drug Interactions
Cimetidine
Increases plasma concentrations of albendazole sulfoxide.
Praziquantel
Increases plasma concentrations of albendazole sulfoxide.
Theophylline
Albendazole can decrease the clearance of theophylline; monitor theophylline levels.
Dexamethasone
Increases plasma concentrations of albendazole sulfoxide.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), lethargy, and dizziness. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered soon after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Category C. Contraindicated in the first trimester. Should only be used in later trimesters if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Lactation: It is not known whether albendazole or its metabolites are excreted in human milk. Exercise caution.
