Description
Overview of the medicine
Vesotan 16 mg Tablet contains Betahistine, which is used to treat symptoms of Meniere's disease, such as dizziness (vertigo), ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and hearing loss.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 8-16 mg three times daily, preferably with meals. The dose may be adjusted based on clinical response.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required, but caution is advised in elderly patients with co-morbidities.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required, but caution is advised in patients with severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with water, preferably with meals to reduce gastrointestinal upset. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Betahistine acts as a weak Histamine H1-receptor agonist and a potent Histamine H3-receptor antagonist. It is thought to increase histamine turnover in the central nervous system and improve microcirculation in the inner ear, thereby reducing symptoms of Meniere's disease.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic improvement may take several weeks or months of continuous treatment.
Excretion
Excreted almost entirely in the urine as 2-PAA within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Rapidly and extensively metabolized primarily to 2-pyridylacetic acid (2-PAA), an inactive metabolite.

- Hypersensitivity to betahistine or any component of the tablet
- Pheochromocytoma (a rare tumor of the adrenal gland)

Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and convulsions (especially at very high doses). Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
