Description
Overview of the medicine
Victorin 40 mg Suspension is a broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections. It is generally well-tolerated and effective against susceptible organisms.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults: 500 mg once daily for 3-7 days, depending on infection type.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required based solely on age, but consider renal/hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
Mild to moderate renal impairment: No dose adjustment. Severe renal impairment: Use with caution; dose reduction may be necessary.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. For best absorption and to minimize gastrointestinal upset, it is often recommended to take Victamycin with a meal.
Mechanism of Action
Victamycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing peptide translocation. This leads to a bacteriostatic effect, stopping the growth and multiplication of bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects usually observed within 2-3 days of initiation.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in bile and feces, with a minor portion excreted renally.
Half life
Approximately 10-14 hours, allowing for once-daily or twice-daily dosing.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally; absorption can be affected by food. Peak plasma concentrations are typically reached within 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver via cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP3A4).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Victamycin or any macrolide antibiotic.
- Patients with severe hepatic impairment.
- Concomitant use with drugs known to prolong QT interval.
Drug Interactions

Antacids
May decrease absorption of Victamycin. Administer Victamycin 1-2 hours before or 4-6 hours after antacids.
Warfarin
May increase anticoagulant effect; monitor INR.
Statins (e.g., Simvastatin)
Increased risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis; avoid concomitant use.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children. After reconstitution, store as per label instructions (usually refrigerated and used within 7-14 days).
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), hearing loss, and reversible hepatic dysfunction. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; there is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
