Description
Overview of the medicine
Vidalin-A Injection contains Vitamin A (Retinol) and is used to treat and prevent Vitamin A deficiency, especially in cases of malabsorption or when oral administration is not feasible.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Acute severe deficiency: 100,000 IU intramuscularly daily for 3 days, followed by 50,000 IU daily for 14 days, then maintenance. Severe deficiency: 50,000 to 100,000 IU/day IM. Prophylaxis: Varies, usually lower doses less frequently.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but use with caution and monitor for potential hypervitaminosis A due to reduced metabolic clearance.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment recommendations, but careful monitoring is advised due to potential altered excretion.
How to Take
Vidalin-A Injection is administered via intramuscular (IM) injection. The injection site should be rotated to prevent local irritation.
Mechanism of Action
Vitamin A (retinol) is essential for vision, immune function, cell growth, and reproduction. It is converted to retinal and retinoic acid, which play crucial roles in these processes by acting as ligands for nuclear receptors, modulating gene expression.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement varies depending on the severity of deficiency and existing body stores.
Excretion
Mainly in feces via biliary excretion, with a small amount excreted in the urine.
Half life
Vitamin A is stored extensively in the liver; its half-life can be long and variable, depending on the status of body stores.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the intramuscular injection site.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, where it is conjugated with glucuronic acid and further metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Vitamin A or any component of the formulation
- Hypervitaminosis A (pre-existing excess of Vitamin A in the body)
- Pregnancy, especially in high doses, due to teratogenic risks (unless treating severe deficiency under strict medical supervision)
Drug Interactions
Tetracyclines
Co-administration may increase the risk of benign intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri).
Oral contraceptives
May increase plasma Vitamin A levels, potentially leading to hypervitaminosis A.
Cholestyramine, Mineral oil
May impair absorption of oral Vitamin A (less relevant for injection but still a general consideration for vitamin A status).
Other Retinoids (e.g., Isotretinoin)
Concurrent use significantly increases the risk of hypervitaminosis A.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and direct heat. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Acute overdose symptoms include severe headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, blurred vision, desquamation, and increased intracranial pressure. Chronic overdose leads to hypervitaminosis A with symptoms like bone and joint pain, hepatosplenomegaly, skin changes, hair loss. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, primarily discontinuing the Vitamin A product.
Pregnancy & Lactation
High doses of Vitamin A are known to be teratogenic and are generally contraindicated in pregnancy. Lower doses for documented severe deficiency may be used under strict medical supervision. Vitamin A is excreted in breast milk; however, excessive doses should be avoided during lactation. Consult a doctor.

WHO Essential Medicine
YesClinical Trials
Vitamin A is a well-established nutrient with decades of clinical use. Numerous studies and clinical trials have evaluated its efficacy in preventing and treating deficiency, particularly in vulnerable populations and in conditions like measles.
Lab Monitoring
- Serum Vitamin A levels (for diagnosis and monitoring deficiency/toxicity)
- Liver function tests (especially with high-dose or long-term therapy)
- Intracranial pressure monitoring (if symptoms of pseudotumor cerebri occur)
Doctor Notes
- Confirm Vitamin A deficiency diagnosis before initiating therapy.
- Monitor patients for signs of hypervitaminosis A, especially with high doses or prolonged treatment.
- Exercise extreme caution when administering to pregnant women, only when severe deficiency is confirmed and benefits outweigh risks.
Patient Guidelines
- Do not exceed the prescribed dose without consulting your doctor.
- Report any unusual or severe side effects immediately.
- Store the injection according to instructions, away from light and excessive heat.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
Driving Precautions
Vidalin-A Injection may cause dizziness or blurred vision in some individuals. Patients should exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until they know how the medicine affects them.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in Vitamin A (e.g., carrots, sweet potatoes, leafy green vegetables, liver) to support overall health.
- Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, as these can affect vitamin absorption and liver health.
