Description
Overview of the medicine
Vidalin D is a combination medicine containing Calcium Carbonate and Vitamin D3, primarily used to treat and prevent calcium and vitamin D deficiencies. It helps maintain bone health and is often prescribed for conditions like osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and during pregnancy/lactation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically, 1-2 tablets daily, preferably with or after meals, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution is advised in patients with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustments may be necessary, and regular monitoring of serum calcium and phosphate levels is recommended.
How to Take
Vidalin D tablets should be taken orally. They can be taken with or after meals to improve absorption and reduce potential gastrointestinal upset. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is an essential mineral required for bone formation, nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and many other metabolic processes. Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) plays a crucial role in regulating calcium and phosphate homeostasis, primarily by enhancing the absorption of calcium from the intestine and promoting bone mineralization.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects are gradual, building up over weeks to months with consistent use.
Excretion
Calcium is primarily excreted via feces (unabsorbed portion) and urine (excess absorbed portion). Vitamin D3 and its metabolites are mainly excreted in the bile and feces, with a smaller amount excreted in the urine.
Half life
Calcium has a variable half-life. Vitamin D3 has an elimination half-life of several days, while its active metabolite, calcitriol, has a half-life of 3-6 hours.
Absorption
Calcium is absorbed primarily in the small intestine via active transport and passive diffusion. Vitamin D3 is absorbed from the small intestine, primarily in the jejunum, and requires bile salts for optimal absorption.
Metabolism
Calcium is not metabolized in the traditional sense; it is incorporated into bone or excreted. Vitamin D3 is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (calcifediol) and then in the kidneys to the active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to calcium carbonate, cholecalciferol, or any excipients.
- Hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood).
- Hypercalciuria (high levels of calcium in the urine).
- Severe renal impairment or renal calculi.
- Hypervitaminosis D.
Drug Interactions
Levothyroxine
Calcium may interfere with the absorption of levothyroxine. Separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Bisphosphonates
Calcium may reduce the absorption of bisphosphonates. Take Vidalin D at least 30 minutes after bisphosphonates (or as advised by doctor).
Corticosteroids
May reduce calcium absorption.
Cardiac Glycosides
Hypercalcemia can potentiate the effects of cardiac glycosides, increasing the risk of arrhythmias.
Thiazide diuretics
May reduce urinary calcium excretion, leading to increased risk of hypercalcemia.
Tetracyclines and Fluoroquinolones
Calcium can interfere with the absorption of these antibiotics. Administer Vidalin D at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after these medications.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose (hypercalcemia) may include nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, polyuria, polydipsia, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias and coma. Management involves immediate discontinuation of the medication, rehydration, and supportive care. In severe cases, corticosteroids or calcitonin may be used.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Vidalin D is generally considered safe and often recommended during pregnancy and lactation to meet increased calcium and vitamin D requirements, but should be used under medical supervision to ensure appropriate dosing and avoid excessive intake.

Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of adequate calcium and vitamin D intake for bone health, especially in vulnerable populations like postmenopausal women and the elderly.
- Counsel patients on potential drug interactions and proper administration guidelines.
- Monitor renal function and calcium levels in patients with pre-existing kidney conditions or those on long-term therapy.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew (unless it's a chewable tablet).
- Follow your doctor's instructions regarding dosage and duration of treatment.
- Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including herbal supplements and over-the-counter drugs.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Vidalin D is not known to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience any side effects that impair your concentration or vision, avoid such activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in calcium (dairy products, leafy greens) and vitamin D (fatty fish).
- Engage in regular weight-bearing exercises to promote bone health.
- Ensure adequate sunlight exposure for natural vitamin D production, while being mindful of sun protection.
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption and smoking, as these can negatively impact bone density.
