Description
Overview of the medicine
Vildapin contains Vildagliptin, an oral anti-diabetic drug used to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
50 mg once or twice daily, depending on other medications. Max 100 mg/day.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment generally needed, but caution with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Moderate to severe renal impairment: 50 mg once daily.
How to Take
Oral. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Vildagliptin inhibits dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), an enzyme that degrades incretin hormones like GLP-1 and GIP. This inhibition increases incretin levels, leading to enhanced glucose-dependent insulin secretion and reduced glucagon secretion, thus lowering blood glucose levels.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Glycemic effect noticeable within a few days of initiation.
Excretion
Primarily renal (approx. 85% as metabolites), small amount in feces.
Half life
Approximately 3 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed, Cmax at 1-2 hours. Bioavailability approx. 85%.
Metabolism
Hydrolysis is the major metabolic pathway, mainly by carboxylesterase 1. Not metabolized by CYP450 enzymes.
