Description
Overview of the medicine
Bemsivir is an antiviral medication used to treat certain viral infections by inhibiting viral replication. It belongs to the class of RNA-dependent RNA polymerase inhibitors.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200 mg orally twice daily for 5-7 days, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, but monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment (e.g., reduce to 100 mg once daily).
How to Take
Take Bemsivir orally with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Bemsivir works by inhibiting the activity of viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, an enzyme essential for the replication of many RNA viruses. This disrupts the viral life cycle and prevents the virus from multiplying.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antiviral effects typically observed within 24-48 hours of initial dose.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via urine (renal) and feces (biliary).
Half life
Approximately 4-6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, reaching peak plasma concentrations within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Bemsivir or any component of the formulation
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min)
Drug Interactions
Antacids
Avoid concomitant use as antacids may reduce absorption of Bemsivir.
Rifampicin
May decrease plasma levels of Bemsivir due to enzyme induction.
Ketoconazole
May increase plasma levels of Bemsivir due to enzyme inhibition.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, discontinue Bemsivir and provide supportive care. Hemodialysis is not effective. Monitor vital signs and liver/renal function.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Not recommended during lactation due to unknown excretion in breast milk.
