Description
Overview of the medicine
Virux-HC 5-1 Cream is a topical medication used to treat early signs and symptoms of recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores) in adults and adolescents (12 years and older). It combines an antiviral agent (Aciclovir) to fight the virus and a corticosteroid (Hydrocortisone) to reduce inflammation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply to the affected area 5 times a day for 5 days. Treatment should be initiated as early as possible after the first signs or symptoms of a cold sore appear.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is required for topical application in patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
For topical use only. Apply a thin layer of cream to the affected skin area, including the outer edge of any cold sore lesions. Wash hands before and after application. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or inside the nose.
Mechanism of Action
Aciclovir works by inhibiting viral DNA synthesis and replication, thus stopping the herpes simplex virus from multiplying. Hydrocortisone is a mild corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, redness, and swelling associated with cold sores.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Relief of symptoms can be observed within a few days of starting treatment.
Excretion
Systemic excretion is minimal due to negligible systemic absorption.
Half life
Not specifically determined for topical application due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption of both Aciclovir and Hydrocortisone following topical application to intact or lesioned skin. Local concentrations are high.
Metabolism
Local metabolism may occur; systemic metabolism is negligible due to low absorption.
