Description
Overview of the medicine
Visarin 50 mg Tablet is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, inflammation, and fever associated with various conditions like arthritis, muscle pain, and menstrual cramps.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For acute pain: 50 mg once or twice daily. For chronic conditions: 50 mg daily, or as directed by physician. Maximum recommended dose is 100 mg per day.
Elderly
Lower doses may be required, and patients should be closely monitored for adverse effects. Initiate at the lowest effective dose.
Renal_impairment
Reduced dosage or avoidance in severe impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²); consult physician for dosage adjustment.
How to Take
Take Visarin 50 mg Tablet orally with food or milk to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush, chew, or break it.
Mechanism of Action
Visarin inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, which are responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are mediators of pain, inflammation, and fever, so by inhibiting their production, Visarin helps reduce these symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Analgesic effects typically begin within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via urine (approximately 60%), with some fecal excretion (approximately 40%).
Half life
Approximately 4-6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours after oral administration.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes (e.g., CYP2C9), forming inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Visarin, aspirin, or other NSAIDs
- Active peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, or history of recurrent gastrointestinal ulceration/hemorrhage
- Severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²)
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Severe heart failure (NYHA Class III-IV)
- History of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Third trimester of pregnancy
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Increased plasma lithium levels and potential for lithium toxicity due to reduced renal clearance.
Methotrexate
Increased methotrexate toxicity due to reduced renal clearance.
Other NSAIDs or corticosteroids
Increased risk of gastrointestinal adverse effects, including ulceration and bleeding.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
Increased risk of bleeding due to interference with platelet function and potential for GI irritation.
Diuretics (e.g., furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide)
Reduced diuretic and antihypertensive effects, potential for increased risk of renal impairment.
ACE Inhibitors and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs)
Reduced antihypertensive effect and increased risk of renal impairment, especially in elderly or dehydrated patients.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and rarely, gastrointestinal bleeding, acute renal failure, or respiratory depression. Management involves symptomatic and supportive care. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered within an hour of ingestion for large overdoses. Monitor vital signs and electrolyte balance.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C (first and second trimesters), Category D (third trimester). Not recommended during the third trimester of pregnancy due to the risk of premature closure of the fetal ductus arteriosus. Use with caution during the first and second trimesters, and during lactation, only if potential benefits outweigh the risks. Consult a doctor.

Lab Monitoring
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) for anemia and bleeding risk (especially with long-term use).
- Renal function tests (serum creatinine, BUN) to monitor kidney health.
- Liver function tests (ALT, AST, bilirubin) to monitor liver health.
- Blood pressure monitoring, especially in hypertensive patients.
Doctor Notes
- Always assess patient's cardiovascular and gastrointestinal risk factors prior to initiating NSAID therapy.
- Prescribe the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration consistent with individual patient treatment goals to minimize adverse effects.
- Educate patients on potential signs of GI bleeding and cardiovascular events, and advise them to seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
Patient Guidelines
- Do not exceed the recommended dose or duration of treatment without consulting your doctor.
- Report any signs of gastrointestinal bleeding immediately (e.g., black, tarry stools, severe abdominal pain).
- Avoid concurrent use with other NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin) to prevent increased risk of side effects.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions

Lifestyle Advice
- Limit or avoid alcohol consumption while taking Visarin, as it can increase the risk of stomach irritation and bleeding.
