Description
Overview of the medicine
Vita-Coral-DX 600 mg Tablet is a combination supplement containing Calcium (derived from Coral Calcium) and Vitamin D3. It is primarily used to support bone health, prevent and treat calcium deficiencies, and improve calcium absorption in the body.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by a physician. Best taken with meals.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution is advised in patients with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on serum calcium and phosphate levels. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Oral administration. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water, preferably with food to enhance absorption and minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is an essential mineral for bone formation and maintenance, muscle contraction, nerve function, and blood clotting. Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) helps regulate calcium and phosphate homeostasis and promotes their absorption from the gut, facilitating proper bone mineralization.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects on bone density are gradual, usually observed over weeks to months with consistent use.
Excretion
Unabsorbed calcium is excreted in feces. Vitamin D3 metabolites are primarily excreted in bile and feces, with some renal excretion.
Half life
Calcium's half-life varies, while Vitamin D3 and its active metabolites have a longer half-life (up to several weeks).
Absorption
Calcium absorption is variable and can be influenced by diet and vitamin D levels. Vitamin D3 is fat-soluble and absorbed from the intestine, primarily in the presence of bile salts.
Metabolism
Vitamin D3 is metabolized in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcifediol) and then in the kidneys to the active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
- Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in blood)
- Severe hypercalciuria (high calcium levels in urine)
- Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones)
- Hypervitaminosis D (excessive vitamin D levels)
Drug Interactions
Levothyroxine
Calcium can impair absorption of levothyroxine. Take calcium several hours apart from levothyroxine.
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can reduce their absorption. Take calcium at least 30 minutes after bisphosphonates.
Cardiac glycosides
Increased risk of arrhythmias if hypercalcemia occurs.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase the risk of hypercalcemia.
Tetracyclines and Fluoroquinolones
Calcium can reduce their absorption. Take calcium at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after these antibiotics.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose (hypercalcemia) may include nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, polyuria, polydipsia, fatigue, confusion, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias and coma. Management involves discontinuing the supplement, hydration, and medical intervention to correct calcium levels.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Calcium and Vitamin D are essential during pregnancy and lactation. However, doses should be within the recommended daily allowance and taken under medical supervision to avoid hypercalcemia, which can be harmful to the fetus.

Lab Monitoring
- Serum calcium levels (especially in patients with renal impairment or prolonged use)
- Serum Vitamin D levels (25-hydroxyvitamin D)
- Renal function (creatinine, BUN)
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of adequate dietary calcium and vitamin D intake alongside supplementation.
- Advise patients to report any symptoms of hypercalcemia (e.g., excessive thirst, frequent urination, muscle weakness).
