Description
Overview of the medicine
Vitrocin 100 mg Capsule contains Doxycycline Hyclate, a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical dosage is 100 mg once or twice daily, depending on the infection. For severe infections, 100 mg every 12 hours.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required for elderly patients based on renal function, but caution is advised with hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed in renal impairment due to primary excretion via feces.
How to Take
Take orally with a full glass of water, either with food or milk to minimize esophageal irritation. Avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour after taking.
Mechanism of Action
Doxycycline inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing the attachment of aminoacyl-tRNA to the ribosomal acceptor site. This leads to bacteriostatic effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in feces (about 30-60%) and urine (about 40%).
Half life
Approximately 16-24 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, approximately 90-100%. Food and milk products slightly decrease absorption.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; some hepatic metabolism occurs.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to doxycycline or other tetracyclines
- Children under 8 years of age (due to potential for permanent tooth discoloration and bone growth inhibition)
- Severe hepatic impairment
Drug Interactions
Penicillins
May interfere with the bactericidal action of penicillins.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives. Advise alternative contraception.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May potentiate anticoagulant effect. Monitor INR.
Antacids, iron supplements, calcium supplements
Decrease doxycycline absorption. Separate administration by at least 2-3 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Management is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage or activated charcoal if recent ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category D. Doxycycline crosses the placenta and can cause permanent tooth discoloration and bone growth inhibition in the fetus. Avoid during pregnancy and lactation.
