Description
Overview of the medicine
Volibo 0.3 mg Tablet contains Voglibose, an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor used to lower post-meal blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 0.2 mg to 0.3 mg orally three times daily immediately before each main meal. Max 0.9 mg/day.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, but monitor carefully.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment. No specific adjustment for mild to moderate.
How to Take
Take orally, immediately before each main meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Swallow whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Voglibose inhibits alpha-glucosidase enzymes in the small intestine, which are responsible for breaking down complex carbohydrates into absorbable monosaccharides. This delays glucose absorption, leading to a reduction in post-prandial blood glucose excursions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours after administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged in feces; small amount excreted in urine.
Half life
Approximately 1-2 hours (systemic absorption is minimal).
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily acts locally in the intestine.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily acts locally.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Severe infection
- Severe trauma
- Severe gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., chronic intestinal disease with marked disturbance of digestion and absorption, colon obstruction)
- Hypersensitivity to Voglibose or any component
Drug Interactions
Sulfonylureas, Insulin, Metformin
May increase the risk of hypoglycemia when used concurrently. Dosage adjustment of other anti-diabetic drugs may be needed.
Digestive enzyme preparations (e.g., amylase, pancreatin)
May reduce the effect of voglibose.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose may lead to increased gastrointestinal side effects (e.g., flatulence, abdominal distension, diarrhea). Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Do not consume carbohydrates after an overdose.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Limited data. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Not recommended during breastfeeding due to lack of safety data.

Clinical Trials
Numerous clinical trials have demonstrated voglibose's efficacy in reducing post-prandial hyperglycemia and HbA1c in type 2 diabetic patients. Studies have also shown its safety profile, primarily with gastrointestinal side effects.
Lab Monitoring
- Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels (fasting and post-prandial)
- HbA1c levels
- Liver function tests (periodically, especially if symptoms of liver dysfunction occur)
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize strict adherence to dietary modifications.
- Advise patients about the potential for hypoglycemia when used with insulin or sulfonylureas.
- Counsel on the importance of taking the medication immediately before meals for optimal efficacy.
Patient Guidelines
- Take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor.
- Always take it immediately before meals.
- Do not chew or crush the tablet, swallow it whole.
- Follow a controlled diet and exercise regimen as advised by your doctor.
- Be aware of symptoms of hypoglycemia and how to manage them.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, but only if it's immediately before your next meal. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you remember after a meal, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
Driving Precautions
Voglibose itself does not directly impair driving ability. However, if used with other anti-diabetic medications that can cause hypoglycemia (e.g., sulfonylureas, insulin), caution is advised while driving or operating machinery due to the risk of low blood sugar.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a healthy diet low in simple sugars and refined carbohydrates.
- Engage in regular physical activity.
- Monitor blood glucose levels regularly at home.
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
