Description
Overview of the medicine
Vurdon-SR 100 mg is a sustained-release non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) containing Diclofenac Sodium. It is used to relieve pain, swelling, and inflammation associated with various conditions such as arthritis, muscle pain, and menstrual pain.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One Vurdon-SR 100 mg capsule once daily, preferably after food.
Elderly
Generally the same as adults, but caution is advised due to increased risk of side effects. Lowest effective dose should be used.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage reduction may be necessary in severe renal impairment. Avoid in severe renal failure.
How to Take
Take the capsule whole with a glass of water, preferably after food to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Diclofenac inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, which are involved in prostaglandin synthesis. Prostaglandins are mediators of pain, inflammation, and fever. By reducing prostaglandin production, Diclofenac exerts its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Approximately 2-3 hours for pain relief with SR formulation.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via urine (approx. 60%) and bile (approx. 35%).
Half life
About 1-2 hours for parent drug, but sustained release prolongs therapeutic effect.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the GI tract after oral administration. Sustained-release formulation provides prolonged absorption.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by hydroxylation and glucuronidation.
