Description
Overview of the medicine
Xeridon 5 mg suspension contains Risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic medicine used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Schizophrenia: Initially 2 mg/day, may be increased to 4-8 mg/day. Bipolar mania: Initially 2-3 mg/day, may be increased up to 6 mg/day. Doses can be administered once or twice daily.
Elderly
Schizophrenia/Bipolar mania: Initially 0.5 mg twice daily, may be gradually increased. Lower doses and slower titration are recommended due to increased sensitivity.
Renal_impairment
Initial dose 0.5 mg twice daily. Doses should be titrated slowly with caution, as drug clearance may be reduced.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. Use the provided oral syringe or dropper for accurate dosing. Do not mix with tea or cola drinks.
Mechanism of Action
Risperidone works by selectively blocking dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors in the brain, which helps to improve symptoms of psychosis and mood stabilization.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Initial effects may be observed within a few days, but full therapeutic effects may take several weeks.
Excretion
Approximately 70% excreted in urine and 14% in feces, mainly as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 3 hours for risperidone and 21 hours for 9-hydroxyrisperidone.
Absorption
Well absorbed after oral administration; peak plasma concentration reached within 1 hour for risperidone and 3-4 hours for 9-hydroxyrisperidone (active metabolite).
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by CYP2D6 to 9-hydroxyrisperidone, which is equally active as risperidone.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to risperidone or any component of the formulation.
- Patients with severe central nervous system depression.
Drug Interactions
Carbamazepine
May decrease plasma levels of risperidone and its active metabolite.
Antihypertensives
May enhance hypotensive effects.
Fluoxetine, Paroxetine, Quinidine
May increase plasma levels of risperidone.
CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol, benzodiazepines)
May enhance sedative effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include drowsiness, sedation, tachycardia, hypotension, and extrapyramidal symptoms. Treatment is primarily supportive; maintain airway, monitor cardiac function, and provide symptomatic relief.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Risperidone is excreted in breast milk; a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug.
