Description
Overview of the medicine
Xicotil 20 mg Tablet contains Piroxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by various conditions like arthritis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 20 mg once daily, or 10 mg twice daily. For acute musculoskeletal disorders, 40 mg once daily for the first 2 days, then 20 mg once daily for 7-14 days. Lowest effective dose for shortest duration is recommended.
Elderly
Use with caution; lower doses may be required due to increased risk of adverse effects.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dosage adjustment may be necessary. Not recommended for severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with food or milk to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Piroxicam inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by reversibly inhibiting cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes. This reduces inflammation, pain, and fever.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Analgesic effect usually within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Excreted mainly in the urine (as metabolites) and a lesser extent in the feces.
Half life
Approximately 50-60 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations reached in 3-5 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by hydroxylation of the pyridyl ring.
