Description
Overview of the medicine
Xirofen 0.09% Eye Drop is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat inflammation and pain in the eye, particularly after cataract surgery.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill one drop into the affected eye(s) once daily, beginning 1 day prior to surgery, continuing on the day of surgery, and for 14 days post-surgery.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is necessary for topical ophthalmic administration.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination. Remove contact lenses before administration and wait 15 minutes before reinserting.
Mechanism of Action
Bromfenac inhibits the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2, which are involved in prostaglandin synthesis. By reducing prostaglandin production, it decreases inflammation and pain in the eye.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, with effects typically seen within hours.
Excretion
Mainly through renal excretion of metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 1.5 hours in ocular tissues.
Absorption
Well absorbed into the cornea and anterior chamber after topical ocular administration.
Metabolism
Undergoes minor metabolism primarily by CYP2C9.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to bromfenac or any components of the formulation.
- Patients who have previously experienced hypersensitivity reactions to other NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen) which may include asthma, urticaria, or acute rhinitis.
Drug Interactions
Other topical NSAIDs
Concurrent use with other topical NSAIDs may increase the potential for corneal adverse events.
Topical corticosteroids
Concurrent use may increase the potential for corneal healing impairment.
Storage
Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
An overdose is unlikely with topical ophthalmic administration. If accidental ingestion occurs, seek medical advice. If too much drops are applied to the eye, it can be rinsed out with clean water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman. Consult a doctor.
