Description
Overview of the medicine
Xitabin 150 mg tablet is a broad-spectrum synthetic antibacterial agent used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
150 mg once daily for 7-14 days, depending on the severity and type of infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required based on age alone; however, monitor renal function due to potential age-related decline.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance <30 mL/min, reduce dose to 75 mg once daily. No adjustment needed for mild to moderate impairment.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Xitabin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes involved in bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged via urine (approximately 70-80% of the dose) within 24 hours. A smaller portion is excreted via feces.
Half life
Approximately 6-8 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed orally, with bioavailability around 80%. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver, primarily via CYP450 enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Xitabin or any fluoroquinolones
- •History of tendon rupture associated with quinolone use
- •Children and adolescents below 18 years of age (due to potential for cartilage damage)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effects of warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding. Close monitoring of INR is recommended.
Theophylline
Concomitant use may increase theophylline plasma levels, leading to toxicity. Monitor theophylline levels.
Antacids containing magnesium or aluminum
May significantly reduce the absorption of Xitabin if taken simultaneously. Administer Xitabin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, seek emergency medical attention. Treatment is primarily symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage, adequate hydration, and close monitoring of vital signs. Hemodialysis is not effective in removing Xitabin from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation due to potential risks to the fetus/infant (e.g., cartilage damage). Use only if potential benefits clearly outweigh the risks and under strict medical supervision.
