Description
Overview of the medicine
Xytrex 10 mg Tablet contains Xytrezine, a second-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergic conditions such as seasonal allergic rhinitis, perennial allergic rhinitis, and chronic idiopathic urticaria. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The recommended dose is 10 mg once daily. For some patients, 5 mg once daily may be sufficient.
Elderly
No dose adjustment is generally required in elderly patients with normal renal function. For those with impaired renal function, dosage adjustment is necessary.
Renal_impairment
For patients with moderate renal impairment (creatinine clearance 30-49 mL/min), the recommended dose is 5 mg once daily. For severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 mL/min), consult a physician for further dose reduction.
How to Take
Xytrex 10 mg Tablet can be taken orally with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Xytrezine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It competitively binds to and blocks the histamine H1 receptors, thereby preventing the effects of histamine such as vasodilation, increased capillary permeability, itching, and bronchoconstriction. This results in the alleviation of allergic symptoms without significant central nervous system effects at recommended doses.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically occurs within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys, with about 70-80% of the dose eliminated in urine, largely as unchanged drug.
Half life
The elimination half-life is approximately 8-12 hours in healthy adults.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Undergoes minimal hepatic metabolism, primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Xytrezine, hydroxyzine, or any other piperazine derivative, or any excipients of Xytrex.
- Patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <10 mL/min) without appropriate dose adjustment.
Drug Interactions
P-glycoprotein inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, erythromycin)
These agents may increase plasma levels of Xytrezine, though this interaction is usually not clinically significant given Xytrezine's minimal metabolism. Monitor for increased side effects.
Central Nervous System (CNS) Depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives, hypnotics)
Concurrent use may lead to additive CNS depression, causing increased drowsiness or sedation. Avoid concomitant use or use with caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, tachycardia, tremor, headache, and urinary retention. In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated immediately. Gastric lavage may be considered if ingestion is recent. There is no specific antidote for Xytrezine. Hemodialysis is not effective in removing Xytrezine.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown a risk to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Xytrex should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Xytrezine is excreted into breast milk. Nursing mothers should consult their doctor before using Xytrex, as potential risks to the infant cannot be excluded.

Lab Monitoring
- Routine lab monitoring is not typically required for patients taking Xytrex at recommended doses. Liver and kidney function tests may be considered in patients with pre-existing conditions or prolonged use.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients on the potential for drowsiness, especially during initial therapy or when co-administered with other CNS depressants.
- Counsel patients on proper dose adjustment in cases of renal impairment, referring to guidelines or specialist consultation.
- Emphasize the importance of consistent daily dosing for optimal allergy symptom control.
Patient Guidelines
- Take Xytrex exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine as it may increase drowsiness.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.
