Description
Overview of the medicine
Z-Sil 10 mg/5 ml Syrup is an antihistamine used for symptomatic relief of allergic conditions such as seasonal allergic rhinitis, perennial allergic rhinitis, and chronic idiopathic urticaria. It helps to alleviate symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and skin rashes.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and adolescents 12 years and over: 10 mg (10 ml) once daily.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients with normal renal function. For elderly with impaired renal function, dosage should be adjusted as per physician's advice.
Renal_impairment
Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 ml/min) should consult their doctor for dosage adjustment. Typically, 5 mg (5 ml) once daily or alternate day dosing is recommended.
How to Take
Take Z-Sil syrup orally, with or without food. Use the provided measuring spoon or cup to ensure accurate dosing. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Mechanism of Action
Z-Sil acts as a selective H1-receptor antagonist. It effectively blocks the action of histamine, a natural substance released by the body during an allergic reaction, thereby preventing the symptoms of allergy.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes after oral dose.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine, with a small portion eliminated in the feces. Renal impairment can significantly prolong its elimination half-life.
Half life
Approximately 8-12 hours in adults, may be longer in children and elderly patients.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract following oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are usually reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Undergoes minimal hepatic metabolism. The majority of the drug is excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Z-Sil, hydroxyzine, or any piperazine derivatives.
- Patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 10 ml/min).
Drug Interactions
Theophylline
A small decrease in Z-Sil clearance has been observed with concurrent theophylline administration (400 mg/day).
Alcohol and CNS Depressants
Concurrent use may enhance CNS depression and impair alertness.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, agitation, headache, tachycardia, and urinary retention. In case of an overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Management is primarily symptomatic and supportive; there is no specific antidote. Gastric lavage may be considered if recent ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Consult your doctor before using Z-Sil syrup if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. While studies have not shown significant harm, use only if clearly needed and the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or infant.
